In the Botanic Garden
Portmeirion pottery and china was founded in 1960 by the legendary pottery designer Susan Williams-Ellis. Always at the forefront of contemporary design, Susan was renowned for her originality in both design and manufacturing techniques.
Following the success and increasing demand for their pottery, in 1960 Susan and her husband Euan purchased a pottery decorating company and a manufacturing company, both based in Stoke-on-Trent in England. These two businesses were combined and Portmeirion Potteries was born. Portmeirion Potteries continues to manufacture Susan's designs as well as others in the same factory in Stoke-on-Trent.
The 1970's saw the birth of what is considered by many to be Portmeirion’s most recognized design, Botanic Garden. Launched in 1972, Portmeirion Botanic Garden was uniquely different - inspired by a serendipitous find of antique botanical books- with a variety of individual floral decorations, it embodied the new mood for casual dining. The collection dispensed with the old formalities and brought a new design philosophy for tableware. It became an instant success and has become a classic of British design. Botanic Garden has been hailed by many as the world's most popular casual tableware design.
