George Aratani founded American Commercial Inc in 1948. He did this in California. This brand later became known as Mikasa. Mikasa started out solely as an importer of dinnerware and tableware. Mikasa grew from an importer to a wholesaler over the next twenty years, supplying dinnerware to great American department stores like Bloomingdales, Macy’s, May Department Stores Company and other fine retailers.The American public got to know the brand name 'Mikasa' in 1957.
A few years later, in the '70's, Mikasa ventured out of their already successful comfort zone of 'Dinnerware' and started to introduce crystal stemware, stainless flatware, crystal gifts and picture frames, ceramic vases, table linens and decorative accessories.
In the past few years, Mikasa was bought by Lifetime Brands. Their corporate headquarters are located in Garden City, New York, and has distribution centers located in Robbinsville, New Jersey and Fontana, California.
