Lladro Princess Of The Waves 18.5 x 12.5 Limited edition of 3,000 units
To create this piece, the sculptor looked for inspiration in mermaids, those fabulous beings originally found in Greek mythology and from there spreading to all Western fantastic literature. Although mermaids are usually described as beautiful women with fishtails, the one we find in this work is depicted as a sweet little girl. Compositionally speaking, it is reminiscent in ways of the Danish statue The Little Mermaid; indeed, in both works the mermaid is sitting on a rock, looking towards the horizon. As for its style, we could say that it follows in the wake of the successful limited series Cherub of love. In both cases, the size of the children and the splendid work of modeling make the two pieces seem to come to life.
Made in white matte porcelain, the mermaid's tail and the rock are decorated with enamels. The various tones and intensities enhance the decoration of the tail and the protuberances of the rock. Also noteworthy is the headdress made with fine flower paste filaments reminiscent of corals and seabed plants. Sea flora was also the inspiration for the bracelet and the seaweed necklace worn by the little mermaid.
