Limited Edition of 250. The Sphinx is dressed in a breathtakingly intricate design called Tattoo, which takes a Herend artist seven full days to paint. Because tattooing was practiced by the ancient Egyptians 4000 years ago, the design was a natural choice for Herends Sphinx. Egypts Great Sphinx was named after a legendary Greek creature with the body of a lion and head of a woman. The word sphinx in Greek means to strangle, as the sphinx from Greek mythology strangled anyone incapable of answering her riddle. Just as the Great Sphinx of Giza required monumental work to construct, twenty-five pairs of hands are involved in creating Herends version. Each must be fired at least six times, as compared to three times for typical Herend figurines.
