This theatre would have been common and much frequented by visitors to the English seaside in Victorian times. The show did not originate in England but was widely adopted all over Europe and the English colonies. Traditionally, one puppeteer known as the "Punchman" or "Professor" and would portray "Punch" acting out in an outrageous fashion. The remaining cast of characters in this ever changing comedy rotated and it may not have ever been acted the same way twice.
