The Public Library Act of 1850 was introduced and greatly influenced by the work of William Ewart. The Act gave local boroughs the power to create free public libraries. The origins of over 4500 libraries in the United Kingdom can be traced back to this Act. This Department 56 library honors Mr. Ewart's legacy.
